You lay out a great case for 67 to 74, so why do you state it stops at 72?

Cliff agrees, but why stop at '74, does 1975 not count?

Well, I mean it stops for me for two reasons: 1) by that point, much of what attracted me to the band had disappeared into the past. Different sound, no Pig. But the bigger reason is 2) I got to see them five times in the fall of 72 (including DP 36 which I touted for years--what a Star--Dew!)
and once in 1973 (Cleveland in December when they played one of the longest stars--one of the greats). I moved in a different direction after that. I lived in Philly 1976-79 and spent most of my time in Manhattan (my home) listening to avant guarde, improvisational jazz (E.G. The Art Ensemble of Chicago, and a very young riend of mine named David Murray).

So I lost touch and really don't feel qualified to discuss post 72 intelligently. I know that 73 and 74 were the next logical steps in their evolution, and no doubt were astonishing in their own right. I did see them in 76 at the Upper Darby Theater in Philly, and I enjoyed that show.
But my deep relationship with their music had petered out.

That's why I would not, will not argue that the later stuff was bad or invalid--I just don't know.

But I saw them grow from 1967 through 72 and it was one hell of a ride. I agree with the comment that they really mature by August 1968, though a listem to 2-14-68 is a must for everyone.
Oh--and I like the first Vault release--always have. But I draw the line at the point where I cannot speak intelligently about the music.
